FO: Girls' Simple Openwork Shrug

We were in NC this past weekend for my niece's wedding. Abby wanted to wear her Caprice Sundress to the brunch the next morning, but she thought her shoulders might be a bit cold. Of course she could have worn her wedding sweater, but she wanted to run and play with her cousins and thought a shrug would be better (and yes, my almost 5 yo dd really voiced all these opinions on her own!). So, this Simple Openwork Shrug was born.

Girl's Simple Openwork Shrug

Project details:

Hook: Brittany 4.5mm hook
Yarn: Classic Elite Flash 'Pink Tweed'
Size: This fits my 5 yo who wears mostly sizes 5-6. It was 22 inches x 10 inches before sewing.

Pattern: My own - designed to match stitch pattern of NY Yarns Caprice Sundress.

Ch 90 , must be a multiple of 4 + 6.

Row 1: Dc in 4th chain from hook, (dc in next ch) twice, *ch 1, skip one ch, (dc in next ch) 3 times, repeat from * across.

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), *3 dc in ch-1 space, ch 1, repeat from * across, dc in top of turning ch.

Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in ch-1 space, ch 1, *3 dc in ch-1 space, ch 1, repeat from * across, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch.

Repeat rows 2-3, ending with row 2, for a total of 20 rows, or as wide as you need shrug to be.

Fold in half, bringing the top of final row to the foundation chain.

Holding right sides together, sew 20 stitches in from each end to form sleeves. Weave in ends.

I found your pattern while searching the web for a shrug for my daughter. Thanks so much for sharing it. It was a lot of fun to make and easy for a beginner. You can see my finished work here - http://craftingentropy.blogspot.com/2007/08/my-daughter-is-always-chilly-in-church.html

I thought I was the only one with a child who regularly voices her opinions on clothing! My granddaughter has been choosing her clothes for almost 4 years now. If in doubt, try getting her to wear something she doesn't want to - and she is only 5 now. Thanks for a delightfully easy pattern she loves - now if we could just find the color she wants.

My daughter tends to get cold in restaurants where the AC is cranked. I made one for her (in a color of her choosing) that we keep in the car, just in case. Now I'm making one in a different color for her to keep in her backpack at school. She loves it! Thanks for sharing the pattern with us.

Just love your shrug.

I also need to know how many skeins this took and doing a search on the yarn shows it is a WW, but is that like Lilys Sugar and Cream or like Red Hearts Supersaver

Hello again...
I'm just now working on this for a Christmas gift for my granddaughter. She is 8 y.o. and 27" from elbow to elbow, so I increased the starting ch to 114 & used an H hook. I hope you see my post as I think there is an error in the pattern. It is at the end of Row 3. I believe you meant for it to read "repeat from * across ending with 2 dc in last sp & 1 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch." Please let me know if I'm wrong on this. Thanks for this lovely pattern.

Patrope - I made this once with leftover yarn - not exactly sure about yardage. About the error - es it makes sense, I believe you are correct. Thanks - I'll fix it!

I made this shrug for my daughter - it was so easy and turned out very cute!

I posted pictures of the finished project on Ravelry, and blogged about it: http://ridingthelifecoaster.blogspot.com/2009/02/im-happy-hooker.html

I linked to your blog post - hope that's ok.

Thanks again!

This is adorable and I'm making four of them: 2 for the five-year old granddaughters but I need to enlarge this for the 8 year old granddaughters. How many do I need to increase to enlarge the size to say a 10-12 girls? THESE ARE JUST BEAUTIFUL!

I certainly love you pattern. I've enlarged it in the number of sts. so that i can make it for my sister who is in a nursinghome. I'm hoping she likes it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks for the pattern! It was easy to follow, which is a necessity for me!y daughter also called crocheting, yarning! I can't wait until morning for her to try it on! She wants to wear it to cover spaghetti straps on her favorite sundress, so she can take school pictures in the dress! I hope it looks cute on!!! Thanks again! This was my first garment beyond sole scarves and hats!

I am visiting your site for the first time...loved your simple yet easy to understand description.. also, i enjoyed your writing style.. have tried your hand at writing ?

I'm working on this now and am wondering how many sets of 3 you have per row? its looking like i may have done something wrong, the chain feels a lot tighter than the next rows, they're almost curling while i crochet it.

How did you come up with the measurements. I want to make it for my 2 yr old granddaughter.

This is an amazing pattern! I was looking for something simple to start from to make a jacket for my daughter for Halloween. This was a perfect starting point! I had never made a shirt or jacket or anything and wasn't sure how to start. Thank you so much! You helped make me my daughter's hero!
